Weigh It Before You Print The Label

# Weigh It Before You Print The Label

Most resellers have guessed a package weight at least once. The box feels light, the label goes on, and then the carrier adjusts the postage after the fact, or the buyer receives a notice about postage due. Neither outcome is worth the few seconds a scale takes.

A simple weighing routine protects your margin and keeps the delivery experience clean for the buyer.

Weigh The Packed Box, Not The Item

The item alone is only part of the weight. Packing material, the box, tape and any inserts all count. Weigh the package exactly as it will ship, sealed, with the label space ready.

If you list before you pack, record an estimated packed weight in the listing and then confirm it at packing time. A shoe box, bubble wrap and a pair of boots can weigh noticeably more than the boots.

Round Up And Check Dimensions

Carriers charge in steps. If a package lands just over a weight boundary, round up rather than hoping it passes. For larger boxes, measure length, width and height too; size can affect the price as much as weight.

Keep a tape measure next to the scale so both checks happen in the same motion.

Use The Right Scale

A kitchen scale often tops out too early for shipping. A basic postal or shipping scale reads larger packages and is easier to read with a box on it. Check it now and then with something of a known weight.

Keep A Weight Note For Repeat Items

If you sell the same kinds of items often, keep a short list of typical packed weights: a video game in a padded mailer, a hoodie in a poly bag, a set of plates in a double box. The list speeds up listing and gives you a sanity check when a reading looks off.

Tell The Buyer What To Expect

Accurate postage means the package arrives without surprises. If you offer calculated shipping, an accurate weight also means the buyer pays the right amount at checkout.

When something does go wrong, respond quickly and plainly. Explain what happened and what you will do about it. Most buyers are understanding when the seller owns the mistake.

The habit is simple: pack, weigh, measure, round up, then print. The scale takes seconds, and it is cheaper than a guess.
